Sept. 30, 2022

Organized by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and the Regional Anti-Corruption Initiative, a workshop on the implementation mechanisms of the UN Convention against Corruption (UNCAC) was held in Kumbor from September 27 to 29. The representative of the Agency for Prevention of Corruption, Marina Mićunović, as the national contact point for the review of implementation of the Convention in Montenegro, presented the experiences of our country in that process.

The review of UNCAC implementation, within the II cycle that evaluates the implementation of Chapter II - Preventive measures and Chapter V - Asset Recovery, involves several stages: filling in the Questionnaire for self-assessment of the implementation of UNCAC, visiting the evaluated country, as well as drawing up the final Evaluation Report. The entire procedure is coordinated by UNODC on behalf of the UNCAC Conference of States Parties.

On behalf of Montenegro, the team of the Agency for Prevention of Corruption, in cooperation with the Supreme State Prosecutor's Office and other institutions, as well as representatives of the private and civil sectors, carried out the most important stages of this process. The aim of the evaluation is to identify challenges and good practices in order to provide technical assistance to the states, in order to ensure the effective implementation of the Convention.

In the following period, the finalization of the Evaluation Report for Montenegro is expected, which will contain comments on the extent to which our country has harmonized its legislation and practice with the provisions of the Convention in the aforementioned areas.

As a reminder, on October 23, 2006, Montenegro acceded to the UN Convention against Corruption and thus joined the community, which today has 189 signatories. The Convention is the only legally binding international anti-corruption multilateral treaty of this scope.
