Press Release regarding Transparency International Report

Montenegro's progress on the TI list
Jan. 23, 2020

Montenegro ranked 66th in Transparency International's most recent 2019 Report, with a Corruption Perceptions Index of 45. This is one place better than the previous Report when it ranked 67th with the same Corruption Perceptions Index.

The Agency for Prevention of Corruption recalls that Montenegro has made significant progress on Transparency International's list in recent years, compared to the first survey since its independence, published in 2007, which ranked 84; with index 3.3 (33 according to the current methodology).

Progress on Transparency International's list is a confirmation of the intense work and concrete results of the Agency and other government bodies responsible for combating corruption in preventive and repressive terms. A better position is also an indicator that our country takes the fight against corruption very seriously, as one of the priorities in the EU integration process. At the same time, it is a strong encouragement for the continued implementation of all anti-corruption laws, measures and activities.

In comparison to countries in the region, Montenegro is better positioned in the new Transparency International Report than Serbia (91st, CPI 39), Kosovo and Bosnia and Herzegovina (shared 101st place, CPI 36), Albania and Northern Macedonia (share 106th place, CPI 35). Also, when it comes to comparison with EU member states, Montenegro is better ranked and has a better corruption perception index than Romania, Hungary and Bulgaria.

The Agency for Prevention of Corruption, as a key preventive anti-corruption institution, will continue to effectively, consistently and impartially exercise all competencies under the Law on Prevention of Corruption and other regulations within its jurisdiction. We expect that in this way and in cooperation with other competent authorities and entities involved in the fight against corruption, we will make a significant contribution to the even better results of our country in the next reports of Transparency International.
